SURFACE:  A deep black lacquer surface built from many polished coats — it reads as having depth, like looking into dark water, with a soft broad reflection sweeping across it and a few faint polishing swirls. Every motif is INLAID SHELL - thin cut pieces of iridescent mother-of-pearl set flush into the lacquer, each piece with a visible cut edge and a hairline dark seam around it, and the shell flashing different colours across its surface — cyan, violet, rose, pale green — depending on angle, with the natural growth striations of the nacre visible inside each piece. Larger forms are assembled from many small shell tesserae, not one continuous sheet. Fine 描金 gold-powder line work adds tendrils and hairline detail between the shell pieces. A restrained cinnabar-red lacquer accent appears in one or two small areas only. Raking light so the shell iridescence ignites and the lacquer stays deep and dark.
